What is TXIOS?

 

The TEXAS INSTITUTE for ORCHESTRAL STUDIES is a two-week summer-intensive academy for advanced study of orchestral performance and performance practices. TXIOS offers a daily schedule of study, preparation, sectional coaching and full orchestra rehearsals with weekly performances.

Designed for university and high-school instrumentalists who are currently engaged in or have completed most of their formal study. Institute Fellows will experience a professionally managed and structured program including classroom study of Music Theory, Music History (related to programs being prepared), sectional coaching, full-orchestra rehearsals and weekly public performances.

The Texas Institute Symphony Orchestra Experience:

TXIOS offers a high level, serious orchestral experience as a performing member of The Texas Institute Symphony Orchestra. The Institute Artistic Director, along with guest conductors and the artistic leadership team, selects a range of musically and technically demanding literature for to prepare and perform.

The Institute Orchestra is held to the highest possible artistic and musical standards, rehearsing ten times per week. Both pre-college and university musicians comprise the orchestra’s personnel.  

Rehearsals and performances will be conducted by Felix Torres, Artistic and Music Director of the Mesquite (Texas) Symphony Orchestra, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Music Director Laureate of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and by gifted participants in the Conducting Institute of Texas.

Concerto Reading and Performance Opportunities:

Do you have a concerto or concerto movement ready to perform?  When you apply, you will be given the opportunity to indicate whether you wish to be considered for a concerto reading or performance with the Institute Symphony Orchestra.  The Institute’s artistic faculty will evaluate your uploaded video audition and contact you regarding its decision.  If selected, you will be scheduled to rehearse and perform.

Classes:

Institute Fellows will participate in studio master classes led by professional orchestra musicians in a range of topical areas. Participants additionally benefit from Music Theory and Music History classes related to the Institute’s programs.  Recent seminar topics may include university audition techniques, professional audition techniques and preparation, orchestral etiquette, chamber ensemble rehearsal techniques, surviving and thriving in a symphony orchestra, building your freelance career, and more.
